The Dames were a popular duo of Maui singer/songwriters, much in the same vein as the Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge. Except we like our Dames better! All of the songs are well written originals. We've heard that the Dames have left for the mainland; they opened the show for some mainland band called "Hootie & the Blowfish" and the Blowfish took such a liking to them that they are helping them get some mainland exposure! FRANK DELIMA
"Silva Anniversary" -- Celebrating his 25th anniversary as Hawaii's premiere comedian, Frank has compiled some of his best known and best loved "bits" on this CD. And in keeping with his outrageous sense of humor, the album's liner notes aren't just sparse -- there are none. No cover photo...nothing. Just bare bones comedy, De Lima-style! The final track is truly a joy to hear again (long unavailable) -- his Na Hoku Hanohano Award winning song, the beautiful "Waimea Lullaby".

KELLY BOY DELIMA
Promo page ... Stepping outside of his usual place within the group Kapena, Kelly Boy presents an interesting array of selections on his first solo album. Star Bulletin review: "KAPENA, Kelly DeLima and Timo and Tiva Tatofi, signed with Ken Kahanu Post in 1986, won two Hoku Hanohano Awards in 1988, and has been hot ever since. That makes DeLima's solo album puzzling. It was released without formal announcement two months ago and finds him doing what he's done for 12 years -- but without the Tatofis. DeLima is a memorable singer and ukulele virtuoso. He adds local-style rap lite to a loopy make-over of the Miracles' "Tears of A Clown" and makes it his most imaginative pop remake. "Tropical Lady," recorded by Kapena in 1986, is another gem. Three new songs show his range as a writer. "It Won't Be Long" is a solid testament of Christian faith, but other remakes are basic local pop and Jawaiian stuff with the usual excess synthetic filler. Stronger arrangements would better display his talent."
Song: Kelly De Lima, Troy Fernandez, Andy Sexton, Jerry Byrd - Leimomi

Promo page ... If you don't know who Jack de Mello is, and his many contributions to the music and musicians of Hawai`i, you need this album to at least help you scratch the surface of all his works. If you know who Jack de Mello is, you will want this album to remind you of his classic compositions and orchestral stylings -- from proud marches, to lush waltzes, to the songs held near and dear by all who love Hawai`i. Liner notes contain no lyrics, but do provide a rich history of de Mello's contributions.

MARTIN DENNY

Website
Promo page -- During the 1950s and 1960's Martin Denny's recordings, with their birdcalls and pulsing jungle rhythms, evoked images of the tropics for everyone. Mix yourself a mai tai, and let this double "Best of" album transport you to the Tiki Lounge! Martin Denny Golden Greats. Martin Denny's brand of music, as represented by this Golden Series album, covers many bases. With one exception, "Hawaii Tattoo," the song titles offer no suggestion that they are performed in a style with a history and character of its own: the solid character of the Hawaiian people. "A Taste Of Honey," and "More" are from films. "Ebb Tide," "Call Me" and "Black Orchid" are songs off the record hit parade. "Quiet Village" is, of course, one of Denny's most unique successes, replete with the sounds of jungle inhabitants. "Beyond The Reef" and "The Enchanted Sea" are musical salutes to the Pacific Ocean which surrounds the Islands and their citizens.

PETER DILLINGHAM (& FRIENDS)
- In 1947, steel guitarist Peter Dillingham decided to record some of the favorites of the day. With Bill Akamuhou as the lead vocalist and Bill's group, the Nautical Hawaiians handling backup, Peter took his 6-string steel into the studio. Together they recorded a dozen songs. These recordings were put away and forgotten until 1999 when Peter found them in a closet a home -- boxes of 78s that had not seen the light of day for over 50 years. Now, restored and remastered, comes this "new" release. (Limited Edition Vol I & II)

E & S HAWAIIAN BAND (Broken Link)
E & S Hawaiian Band began evolving over 20 years ago when Evan "Eddy" Lee and Kelly "Scotty" Scott started to play music, and to sing and compose songs around late night campfires under the moon at Ehuka'i Beach on O'ahu's North Shore. But the duo is much more than just a pair of musicians in a band. Besides collaborating in music the two have also been best-friends, and their friendship has been based on a common high-school background, and upon sharing together many day-to-day activities such as surfing and power-lifting.
MICHAELLE EDWARDS
Promo - "Tropical Twilight" This CD won A Hoku Hanohano Award in 1998 for Best New Jazz Vocal Recording and it's easy to see why. Michaelle Edwards' biggest influences are Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday. These selections run the gamut from jazzy to Brazilian and Hawaiian and feature unforgettable arrangements eloquently written and executed by Peter Sprague- guitar virtuoso, also appearing is Ken Emerson (Michaelle's local "Hula Cats" duo partner) on Hawaiian Steel Guitar. SEE KEN EMERSON
WEBLEY EDWARDS
Archived recordings of Hawaii Calls
As much as anyone, Webley Edwards brought Hawaiian music into American households during the Space Age Pop era. For over 37 years, Edwards produced and hosted the radio series, "Hawaii Calls," featuring live performances broadcast from Honolulu.

Edwards came to Hawaii in 1928 as a car salesman, but in 1935, he arranged for a two-week trial run for a radio show of "authentic" Hawaiian music. With Harry Owens as musical director, "Hawaii Calls" was first heard on Saturday, 3 July 1935, from the Moana Hotel. The show was accepted by stateside listeners, but Edwards was forced to get state funding from the Hawaii Tourist Bureau to break even. In the early years, the performers often went unpaid.

Edwards also faced the problem of material. With the help of Al Kealoha Perry, who took over from Owens in 1937, Edwards slowly accumulated the world's largest collection of Hawaiian songs, over 3000 total, culled from the libraries of Charles King, Johnny Noble, and other "haoles."

Edwards took a break from music to work as a reporter for CBS Radio in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. Among his exclusives was the first interview with Col Paul Tibbetts, pilot of the Enola Gay, after dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Beginning in the early 1950s, Capitol Records signed him to an exclusive deal that resulted in over 20 albums of Hawaiian music released under his name and the "Hawaii Calls" moniker. Edwards was not a perform; rather, he was an impresario who arranged for Hawaiian performers such as Alfred Apaka, Haleloke, Simeon and Andy Bright, and George Kainapau to record for "Hawaii Calls" compilation albums.

Edwards was criticized for bastardizing Hawaiian music to appeal to the continental audience, but his response was, "The songs are not so important. It's the atmosphere we're striving for."

"Hawaii Calls" hung on longer than most shows through the declining days of network radio (the public funding didn't hurt), but after Edwards suffered a heart attack and left the show in 1972, it lost what little listenership it had and its new owners were forced to put it "on vacation" in 1975.

Edwards' Capitol recordings are more noteworthy now for their packaging than for their content. Fire Goddess, for example, features a dramatic native maiden holding up two strategically-placed flaming cocoanuts. But the music is a pretty uninspiring assortment of chants and songs.

“Down in the Valley” became their first hit back in 1999. This album made them well-known not only in Hawaii, but also in the Mainland and as far as the East coast. Three years later, Ekolu came out with their second debut album called, “Shores of Waiehu.” This album gave Hawaii a little twist of its own unique style. Hits such as “Just one Night” and “Shores of Waiehu” took up a lot of air time on the local radio stations in Hawaii.

Thirty-nine years old and holding - this woman is a human dynamo. She's still in top form and continues to travel extensively, doing concerts in Japan and performing at special functions when at home. PROMO - Maui's Myra English began her performing career during the post-World War II days of Honolulu & Waikiki. She performed with slack key guitar great Sonny Chillingworth and steel guitar legend Billy Hew-Len, who also appear on this album of the songs that she was best known for. Her falsetto voice brings the listener to a time of classic Hawaiian music - and her English language songs have a fun country twang to them! Sadly, Myra English passed away in early 2001. Later that year, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.

MACKEY FEARY (Bryant Mackey Feary, Jr.)
Bryant Mackey Feary -- Feel sadness over the circumstances of his passing, but feel joy in the music he brought to his fans. The group Kalapana grabbed our attention and wouldn't let go, taking Hawaii by storm with the release of their first album in 1975. Hawaii now had an insatiable appetite for this dynamic surf-rock group and one member in particular was the one we all noticed - Mackey Feary, Jr. In fact, one only had to say "Mackey" and you knew who they meant. His distinctive voice was easily recognizable and his music touched the hearts of those who were in love (or wanted to be). By the age of 20, Mackey had arrived. (SEE KALAPANA)

1999 Na Hoku Awards
Nice writeup on Amy Gilliom and Willy K after the 1998 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. "Amy's kama'aina family roots vibrate joyously with the sound of her unusual musical accomplishment and performance in this, her first truly Hawaiian album. A contemporary, yet respectful, exciting musical adventure performed by a young, consumate artist who understands the importance of the musical traditions of old Hawai'i and the gift of freedom and musical expressions bestowed on the now generation of Hawai'i. Complimenting the artistry of Amy is Willie K. A dynamic, peppery, superinventive performer who created the magnificent musical tapestries of sound upon which to superimpose the vocal interpretations by Amy."

Gilliom recorded four albums with guitarist Willie K. The duo ended their partnership in 2001. To fill the interim of the multiple group breakups in 2001, Barry Flanagan, formerly of Hapa, and Gilliom collaborated to form Mele Hula. They added the former Ka'au Crater Boys guitarist (and Amy's cousin) Ernie Cruz to the mix.

Gilliom uses a style called Ha'i, favored by pioneers Auntie Genoa Keawe, Leina'ala Haili, Linda Delacruz and Myra English. "This is a style of female falsetto that is kind of dying in Hawaiian music," says Gilliom. "Mostly the kupuna, or elders, in Hawai'i sing it." Winner of the 2002 Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Female Vocalist of the Year.

SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC! Tried to cull a wide variety of informative links for Hawaiian Music and organize them here with the use of the Table of Contents. If you find any links that don't work --or have any to add -- please drop me an email. We seek to honor ALL Hawaiian musicians. Though it is impossible to include all, we want to recognize the great Hawaiian musicians of the past. Not everyone who played music in Waikiki made it into the Hall of Fame category, but all of them contributed to make Hawaiian music what it is today. We honor them.

I am NOT an expert on Hawaiian music. I am just a simple person who loves Hawaiian music. The music lifts my spirits when I'm down. It makes me feel good about the world. It washes all my tensions away. It brings back sweet memories of home and the good times of the past. It is part of my soul...as I'm sure it is of so many others.

There are so many artists and groups that come and go on the contemporary Hawaiian music scene that it is hard to keep up. To keep up-to-date with the Hawaiian music scene, tune into the Newsgroup: alt.music.hawaiian . Lurk in the background, post your thoughts, ask questions, share your love of Hawaiian music, or join in the discussions. If you love Hawaiian music, this is the newsgroup for you. There's also the Hawaiian Music Message Board moderated by Stevo which is an excellent forum for general questions on Hawaiian music. Another exceptional resource is Keola Donaghy's Nahenahe.net for the latest information on Hawaiian music.

A must-see resource if you're looking for lyrics to Hawaiian music is HUAPALA. This is the Hawaiian Music & Hula Archives of Ka`iulani Kanoa Martin. This is THE definitive compilation of lyrics for Hawaiian music.

A resource that should not be overlooked when seeking info on Hawaiian musicians is the Hawaiian Music Directory. It is the most comprehensive resource around with a phenomenal amount of info on Hawaii's musicians -- singers, composers and instrumentalists.

To clarify my purposes of using commercial site links on the page: I have NO vested interest in the companies nor gain any profit from them. I have NO affiliation with them. The only purpose is simply to let people know what albums are currently available from the artists. My intent is to support the local musicians by showcasing their talents and letting people know what they've done. The people can search out the albums/tapes/CDs for the best price on their own. An excellent list of on-line music sources to search for your favorite artist can be found on 'Stevo's Hawaiian Music Site.

As to the full-length songs (versus clips) used on this site, let me also clarify. I know that I'm stepping into a very hazy area by using full-length songs. The piracy issue (intellectual property rights) is always in the forefront for the artist. HOWEVER, on my site, clips are very unsatisfying for the expatriate "locals" and Hawaiian soldiers/airmen -- primarily those in Korea -- who are the target audience for my site. They want full-length songs. I found that if I converted mp3s to wma on the lowest settings, the audio was adequate for the computer. However, if anyone tries to reconvert the cut back to mp3s, they will be sadly disappointed as the output will be trash as the sound has been degraded. This is why the songs are NOT recommended for downloading.

Though I am still in a gray area and can be chastised severely if challenged, atleast I'm trying to protect the artists songs -- in a limited way. I can only hope that the artists will understand.

UWOLANI (chanting unto the chiefs) is meant to both entertain and inform. It should be understood, however, that the Kumu Hula and dancers of Halau o Kekuhi are stewards of a deeply rooted tradition that involves lifelong learning. Proper documentation of this recording would require volumes of text, and even then it could not completely explain the dynamics of tradtional Hawaiian music and literature. The album package includes 28-page booklet with Hawaiian chant lyrics and English translations. A portion of the proceeds from sales of this recording will benefit the scholarships, grants, workshops and cultural programs of the Edith Kanaka`ole Foundation. See Honolulu Star-Bulletin album review. ALBUM NOTE: These translations are literal, and do not attempt to explain the kaona (hidden meaning), which in most cases is several layers deep. Promo page - NOLAN HA`O "Kanaka Ki Ho`alu" (1998) -- This recording is symbolic of an enduring friendship between Nolan Ha`o and Walter Tavares. As members of the original group, Ho`aikane, along with John and Russell Mauga, they share a bond that transcends their music as evidenced through the musical and personal changes they endured as members of that band. The most notable change being their transition from Hawaiian traditionalists to the cutting edge of island reggae (Jawaiian) music. But now Nolan is back to his roots in ki ho`alu. And that is what this instrumental album is all about -- Nolan Ha`o playing slack key with his bandmates with a sound that captures the spirit and essence of ki ho`alu in the real old style.

(Group split up in 2001.) When Keli´i Kaneali´i and Barry Flanagan burst on the Hawaiian music scene in 1993 with their first album, boundaries started to melt. With a pulse and energy that make it entirely of today, Hapa's groundbreaking music connected firmly to the Polynesian past, featuring poetic ballads about the sea and the lushness of the land - all told through melodies. 1994 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for Contemporary Album of the Year; Song of the Year ("Lei Pikake"); Most Promising Artists Group of the Year Album of the Year HAPA. The duo continued to win award after award.

Flanagan was the blond half of Hapa, a duo that toured the West Coast regularly and built an ardent fan base. Flanagan's former partner, guitarist and vocalist Keli'i Kaneali'i, abruptly left the group in May 2001. Hapa was just making the leap from playing the intimate clubs to selling out 2,000-seat amphitheaters. The group was just about to embark on its most ambitious tour of Japan when Kaneali'i served notice. The group Mele Hula was formed to fill the contract and was a stupendous success in Japan. The breakup ended a 17-year collaboration.

Promo page -- In the 1990's, the Hawaiian Style Band rode into the island music scene on swingy-reggae rhythms and wholesome vocals, most of them originals written by songwriters Wade Cambern and Na Hoku Hanohano Award Winner Bryan Kessler. The group's three albums, featuring guest musicians such as Israel Kamakawiwo`ole, and the Ka`au Crater Boys, provided a new musical look at contemporary local culture.

Their music was original and refreshing, and they are missed by their fans.

Six years ago, these five young men from O`ahu join their talents to create a sound that is unique to island music. Honolulu Star-Bulletin album review: "PRODUCER Jeff Rasmussen introduces Ho'aloha with the same proven template that launched their Fat Katz labelmates Kulia: An all-star squad of guest musicians in the studio. Fiji as guest vocalist/rapper. A variety of material. It adds up to a promising debut. Two originals are particularly notable. Band member Frank Su'a wrote the title song as a family requiem. Jonathan Hermosura's "I'm Your Man" is smooth romantic ballad. Outside contributions include "Kuliaikau'ilani," a beautiful song written for a band member's daughter. Originals by Fiji and Baba B, a retro-pop tribute to Hawaiian activists, and an interesting remake of an obscure Tower of Power song underscore Ho'aloha's versatility." JONATHAN HO`OMANAWANUI
Island Motive Site
Promo page - Wayne Harada review: "There’s a prolific new voice in the Island mainstream — one worth listening to. Jonathan Hoomanawanui is a Honolulu singer-composer who used to summer on Kauai with family, who graduated from Roosevelt High School, joined the Army and got homesick for his Hawaiian roots while in Colorado Springs, where he formed a dance troupe and band. Now he’s settled back in Honolulu, with a wife and a son. These tunes reflect his journey through life so far. “Kekoa’s Song” is about a daddy’s devotion to a precious child (Every day I wake to see this little gift that God has given me), set to a calypso tempo, and projects universal parental pride. “Jammin’ Tonight” lurks as a singular biggie, with its contagious harmonica intro, easygoing melody and simple sentiment: “ got the blues comin’ down on me and I feel like jammin’ tonight. All sweetened by multiple voice trackings. Equally charming: A place song called “Wainiha,” recalling the beauty of the Kauai area that’s home to ulua and Zodiacs and Grandma’s laughs — with a bit of political commentary about progress contained in a telling line: Soon the poi will be gone. Another Kauai tune, Kalalau, is sweet and nostalgic as it captures an image of a fisherman “who scaled the cliffs like his ancestors did." (NOTE: Jonathan Hoomanawanui formed the Island Motive band in 1994, while stationed at Ft. Carson Colorado. The music is a blend of rock and blues, pop, soft rock, country and Jawaiian, Hawaiian island-style reggae. EMail: Jonathan Hoomanawanui.)

HO`ONUA
Star Bulletin Review
HO'ONU'A -- Jared Keo and Christian Yrizarry -- takes a creative leap forward with their second album. Keo and Yrizarry are still shrewdly perpetrating the basic Jawaiian format in vogue here, but have clearly broadened their musical horizons as well. Most noteworthy is the positive blues ambience of several songs. Few local acts do remakes that are worth hearing but Ho'onu'a proves an exception with two versions of "Fire," one mainstream and one for the Jawaiian market. "Pride," a Yrizarry original, is a reggae-beat plea to end ethnic and neighborhood rivalries. No composer is credited with "Summertime Fun," a 3-minute-and-41 second commercial for FM 100 that includes a salute to long-time FM 100 power broker Davey D and his friend and colleague "Radical Rob" Onekea who produced the track. Don't expect to hear it on Island Rhythm 98.5.

Biography
Hoopi'i Brothers
Hoopi'i Brothers
The legendary Hoopii Brothers. A distinctive feature of many Hawaiian songs is the cultivation of high falsetto singing, called leo ki'eki'e in Hawaiian, practiced especially among men. Solomon and Richard Ho'opi'i are among two of the most accomplished leo ki'eki'e singers, described by fellow National Heritage Fellow Clyde Halema'uma'u Sproat as "large portly men who sing with the voices of angels." Sproat says: "Rick and Sol have touched my life with their sweet voices, contrite spirits, and their willingness to share their aloha and family history through their songs. Their voices, friendly smiles, and sincere loving hearts have done so much for the perpetuation and preservation of the art of Hawaiian Falsetto-style singing."

1997 Na Hoku Hanohano Award Winner: Group of the Year. Born and raised in the village of Kahakuloa on the island of Maui, brothers Solomon & Richard Ho`opi`i have have joined their voices since childhood, singing himene (hymns) at church, and traditional Hawaiian songs at family gatherings. This album was recorded in the studio with friends Herbert Hanawahine, Ledward Kaapana, Chris Kamaka, Jerry Koko, Francis Ku`ailini, Sr., and special guest Aunty Genoa Keawe. SOL HOOPI'I
Master of the Hawaiian Guitar
SOL HO`OPI`I "Master of the Hawaiian Guitar (1927-1951)" Sol Ho`opi`i stands alone as the main synthesizer of traditional Hawaiian music and American jazz. His music influenced a generation of Western Swing and country Dobro and steel guitar players. A master musician's musician, a man of genius whose instrumental artistry can be appreciated by all, Sol Ho`opi`i remains an inspiration to steel players all over the world.

Excerpted from Hawaii Music Hall of Fame1996 Hall of Fame Honoree Sol Ho`opi`i (1902-1953)

Solomon Ho`opi`i Ka`ai`ai, is still acknowledged by steel guitar buffs around the world as "King of the Steel Guitar" for inventing the multiple tunings that are popular today. The eldest of 21 children, Sol, like many Hawaiian children of his time, was taught to play and sing as soon as he could walk. He showed a natural talent for the `ukulele at age 3, for the guitar by the time he was 6, and he turned to the steel guitar as a teenager. Sol's idols were steel guitar inventor Joseph Kekuku, Pale K. Lua and David Kaili, all of whom had already become famous on the mainland . At 17, Sol and two teen-age friends packed up their guitars and `ukulele and headed for San Francisco as stowaways on the ocean liner Matsonia to seek their musical "fortunes". When they were discovered on board, their performances of Hawaiian songs so delighted the passengers, that a collection was taken up to pay their fares.

After a series of club engagements in San Francisco, the trio moved to Los Angeles. When his friends returned to Hawai`i, Sol formed another trio with Lani McIntire and Glenwood Leslie; they recorded on the Brunswick label. Caught up in the 1925-27 Hawaiian rage in Hollywood, Sol's impressive virtuosity on the steel guitar earned him movie credits with such stars as Mary Pickford, Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler; the Charlie Chan movies earned him the title of the "Hollywood Hawaiian". Mary Pickford requested Sol's steel playing for an unusual use: that of putting her in the mood for her crying scenes in silent films.

Called a "genius" on the steel by his protege, Sol K. Bright, Sol Ho`opi`i was noted for his speed and dexterity, and was said to have had the greatest picking hand of all time. He was one of the first to record American songs, which, in the process, helped popularize the Hawaiian-invented steel guitar in the United States especially in the field of country music. Some of steel guitarist Hank Williams' solos are copied directly from Sol Ho`opi`i's stylings. Sol's recordings influenced such well-known steel guitar players around the world as Rudy Wairata (Indonesia), Billy Reid (Canada) and Yukihiko Haida (Japan). Sol Ho`opi`i has been generally regarded by his peers as the foremost Hawaiian steel guitarist.

The name Huna Wai (a drop of water in a spray or mist) signifies this band's connection to traditional Hawaiian music and culture while being on the mainland. Huna Wai is dedicated to perpetuating and sharing the music of Hawai'i.
